Psoriasis Q & A

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by thick, red patches of skin with silvery scales. The skin may become so dry and cracked that it bleeds. The skin may itch, burn, and feel sore. The nails may be ridged, pitted, and thickened. Those who suffer from psoriasis may also have stiff or swollen joints.

Patches of psoriasis can be as minor as dandruff-like scaling to larger flare-ups that cover most of the skin.

What causes psoriasis?

The cause of psoriasis is thought to be linked to a flaw in the body’s immune system. In a process called ‘cell turnover,’ the white blood cell known as the T cell travels throughout the body identifying and defending the body from foreign entities like viruses. Unfortunately, the T cells in those with psoriasis mistakenly attack healthy skin cells like they would if they were fighting an infection.

As a result, more healthy skin cells and T cells are generated. These new cells rise to the skin’s surface much faster than usual—in a matter of days rather than weeks. The dead skin and white blood cells are incapable of falling off fast enough, so they build up into thick patches on the skin’s surface.

Symptoms of psoriasis may come and go. However, eruptions do occur due to certain triggers, such as stress, heavy alcohol consumption, smoking, infections, skin injuries, cold weather, and certain medications.

How is psoriasis treated with natural medicine?

Naturopathic doctors like Dr. Minna Yoon employ a variety of holistic approaches to treating psoriasis. These may include, but are not limited to, changes in diet, exercise, herbal remedies, acupuncture, and mind/body therapies.

Such alternative or complementary approaches help manage the triggers of a psoriasis eruption and also alleviate the symptoms. These methods may be used exclusively or in conjunction with other treatments prescribed by a doctor. Dr. Yoon will work with you one-on-one to determine which natural therapies best suit your case.
