Menopause Consultation Q & A

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Menopause is a normal body phase affecting all women around midlife in which she no longer gets a menstrual period. Because every woman is different, women may experience a range of signs and symptoms that point to the onset of menopause. This state is characterized by changes in the female reproductive system and the production of relevant hormones. Common symptoms include:

  • Changes in your periods, such as closer periods, heavier bleeding, longer periods, and spotting
  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful intercourse
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Memory problems

Some women will experience certain symptoms and some may not. Every woman’s experience with menopause is unique.

When will menopause symptoms start?

There is no set date of onset for menopause. Still, research has shown that the average age of a woman’s last period is around 51. Changes start occurring in a woman’s body before the last period, however.

Changes in the reproductive hormones, estrogen, and progesterone can cause symptoms during a phase called perimenopause. Your menstrual periods stop altogether in a phase called menopause. You are officially through menopause when your menstrual periods have stopped for a full year. This point and beyond is known as postmenopause.
