Eczema Q & A

by Minna Yoon, ND, LAc

What causes eczema?

Eczema is a family of skin conditions affecting as much as one-third of the population. Researchers have been unable to identify the exact causes of eczema. Many lean toward it being caused by genetics, meaning someone in your family has the condition or another condition, such as hay fever or asthma. Doctors often consider these conditions to have a link.

While the exact causes may be unknown, several triggers have been associated with causing eczema to flare up or worsen. These include the following:

  • Irritants like soaps, detergents, disinfectants, and contact from certain foods
  • Allergens like dust mites, pets, mold, and pollen
  • Microbes like bacteria, fungi, and viruses
  • Hot or cold temperatures
  • Food allergies, such as to wheat or dairy
  • Stress
  • Hormones

Since these factors may contribute to eczema worsening, many people find they can prevent flare-ups be avoiding certain triggers.

What are the signs and symptoms of eczema?

Also called dermatitis, eczema is a term used to describe various types of skin swelling. The majority of cases exhibit dry, itchy, sensitive skin that may become red or inflamed. Rough, leathery patches or scaly areas may erupt on the face, on the hands or feet, inside the elbows, and behind the knees. Some patches may ooze or crust over. Some may swell after being scratched. Other eruptions may turn the skin dark in color in certain areas.

Is eczema contagious?

No, eczema is not contagious. Many believe the condition is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Therefore, members of the same family may have the condition, but one does not ‘contract’ the condition from another.

Is there a cure for eczema?

Eczema is a long-lasting, chronic condition with symptoms that come and go. There is no cure for eczema. However, learning your symptoms and cures and working with a naturopathic doctor like Dr. Yoon can help you to manage your eczema and experience fewer flare-ups.
